Holiday On High

Nothing is more memorable than spending Christmas in the mountains. Picture snow-capped peaks, crisp mountain air, cozy sleigh rides and quaint towns decked in pine garlands and white lights. If you're planning a holiday vacation in one of Colorado's mountain towns, you're in for an incredible visit. Many resort towns plan holiday events and activities to inspire the whole family to get into the spirit. Here's a sampling of what you'll find when sleigh bells ring:

Santa on skis: Every year Santa makes his rounds on skis to a number of ski resorts. From photo opportunities to breakfast, there are plenty of fun opportunities for the kids to visit with Santa away from home.

Torchlight parades: If the kids have more energy to expend, take them to a torchlight parade. During many holiday evenings, skiers and snowboarders of all ages are invited to slide down a green run, candle in hand. The beautiful light shows will create a lasting memory for everyone in the family.

Holiday music: Although you're bound to find them throughout mountain towns, Christmas carolers are cherished annually in Aspen, where the Dickens Christmas Carolers sing regularly on the Snowmass Village Mall. Steamboat and Breckenridge typically host annual holiday concerts ranging from jazz to classical.

Kids-only activities: Resorts organize plenty of games and crafts to keep the kids happy. For example, Keystone resort helps children write and send a letter to Santa. There's also family ice skating at the Keystone Ice Rink and an ice party on Christmas Eve. Copper Mountain fills little bellies with holiday cheer during Christmas cookie-decorating parties at the Belly Button Bakery.

And holiday activities aren't the only thing worth celebrating; great lodging deals abound during this time of year. Packages range from an affordable Ski, Swim & Stay package (800-445-7931) at Sunlight Mountain Resort and nearby Glenwood Hot Springs, to fully customizable family packages at kid-friendly ski areas such as Winter Park, Vail, Ski Cooper and Powderhorn.
