The Central City Opera House is the crown jewel of Central City’s preservation efforts. Built in 1878, it has been a mainstay of the city’s cultural scene, both in times of boom and bust.
One of Colorado’s most notable architects, Robert S. Roeschlaub, designed the building and employed sandstone from a local quarry to give it the natural appearance of the surrounding terrain. The interior’s ornate stone masonry and woodwork harken back to a time when aesthetic details were emphasized, no matter how much time and effort they required.
As a fully functioning performing arts venue, the Central City Opera House is more than just a historic landmark. Enjoy live opera performances like “The Ballad of Baby Doe,” the venue’s signature performance, which celebrated its 50th anniversary of production in 2006.
Other lovingly preserved buildings in Central City include the Gilpin County Courthouse and the two-story brick schoolhouse that is now home to the Gilpin History Museum.
Did You Know?
Not only has the Central City Opera Association received awards for its preservation efforts, but the opera house itself is the oldest running theater in the Rocky Mountain Region.
Good to Know Before You Go:
Keep in mind that if you attend the opera, a dress code applies. While matinees tend to be more casual, the standard attire is formal. You may wish to bring a jacket or shawl since Central City is a mountain town at 8,500 feet, and summer evenings tend to be cool.
Ticket prices to see a performance range from $34 to $74 for a single show during the regular season. Gather up nine of your closest friends, and save 15% through special group rates.
You can reserve a parking space in advance for $12 in the Central City Opera’s reserve lot (call before the day of performance) or you can park at the Fortune Valley Casino, based on availability.
ADA Accessibility:
The Opera House’s main floor is accessible to those with disabilities. You can also inquire about specific reserved seats for performances.
