Colorado Chautauqua

In the late 1800s and early 1900s, a movement emerged in the United States to further the education and enlightenment of working-class citizens, by creating local gathering places dedicated to learning. Known as Chautauquas—named for the first assembly of this kind near Chautauqua Lake in New York—these public places offered a place for traveling lecturers, politicians, writers and entertainers to deliver their message to large crowds.

The Colorado Chautauqua, located at the foot of the Flatirons in Boulder, has been in continuous operation since July 4, 1898, and is one of only three remaining Chautauquas in the country.

Along with its restored cottages, award-winning Dining Hall and spectacular Community House, the centerpiece building of the Colorado Chautauqua is the Auditorium, an acoustically superior building listed on the National Register of Historic Places. Concertgoers flock to the venue to see a variety of musical acts take the stage, especially during the Summer Music Festival, where night after night you'll find a symphony or popular concert.

Take a self-guided walking tour of the Colorado Chautauqua’s scenic grounds, and let its living history breathe life into your journey.
