Visit Meeker and immerse yourself in a rustic and pastoral lifestyle that has endured since the late 1800s. Much of Meeker’s social fabric is centered on ranching, and to this day, Market Street is often a conduit for cattle and sheep ranchers who drive their livestock through town to pasture. In early September, the town celebrates its sheep-rearing heritage with the Meeker Classic Sheepdog Trials, where you can watch border collies herd sheep with surprising grace and quickness. Awards are given for the week’s top dog.
Meeker is also home to many historic buildings. Of special note is the Meeker Hotel, which was built in 1896 and expanded in 1904. The hotel accommodated Teddy Roosevelt, whose passion for the great outdoors brought him to the White River Valley. You can also experience two original buildings of the U.S. Army Garrison used by soldiers in the 1880s, now home to the White River Museum.
Little Did You Know:
When the deer and elk hunting seasons roll around, this small town’s population of roughly 2,200 nearly doubles—understandably so, as the game in this area is both abundant and trophy-worthy.
Good To Know Before You Go:
In the past few years, an “almost” albino mule deer buck has been seen grazing near town. Have plenty of film ready should you get the chance to see this very rare creature. He’s off-limits to hunters—so only take aim with your lens.
ADA Accessibility:
Accessibility varies from door to door within the town. The town streets themselves offer accessibility.
