Situated near the Kansas border, along CO Hwy. 96, Chivington is an agrarian community in the Great Plains. The major visitor attraction in the area is the National Park Service-run Sand Creek Massacre Historic Site. It’s from the history of this site that the town takes its name. In 1864, a number of United States soldiers descended upon and attacked a band of Cheyenne and Arapaho Indians, which mostly consisted of women and children. Chivington was the colonel who led the US troops into the fracas. Today, visitors can visit the site of the massacre from April through November.
