Halfway between the towns of Durango and Cortez in the Four Corners area of southwestern Colorado, Mancos is coming into its own. Visitors to nearby Mesa Verde National Park are discovering it's a good stepping-off point for visiting the popular park. In fact, you can see the high mesas from here. Naturally, you wouldn't get this close without spending at least a day in the park, exploring the world-famous cliff dwellings.
Mancos has a growing tourism industry, with some great bed-and-breakfast inns popping up in the area. If you'd rather rough it, you can camp in nearby Mancos State Park. Or, if you're looking for something in between, rent a yurt in the park. A few restaurants, notably an excellent bakery, are thriving downtown.
One of the most fun diversions in town is a stagecoach ride. It's a way to get a real taste of what this mode of travel must have been like.
But first thing, stop at the new Mancos Visitors' Center and the Pioneer Museum to get oriented. It’s a great way to discover all this town has to offer.
