Originally founded by Spanish farmers, Walsenburg in southern Colorado lies just off I-25, but feels like a town untouched by modern times. A new visitor's center has brought Walsenburg up to date. At the center, pick up a map for the Scenic Highway of Legends, which begins west of town and wends its way through some of Colorado's most interesting historical locales and beautiful scenery, including great rock walls.
Often ignored by guidebooks, Walsenburg doesn't have many attractions or fine dining spots. But it does have a small-town atmosphere, a few good restaurants and several places where a die-hard fisherman can land a hook. Try Lathrop State Park just west of town, in view of the grand Spanish Peaks. There are lots of campsites and much of the park is wheelchair-accessible. In hot summer months, take a refreshing swim at the lake.
And just like in your own hometown, the Walsenburg Park offers shady spots for picnics.
