March 29–April 20: Greater Prairie Chicken Tours
Wray (Northeast Travel Region)
The prairie chicken is a rarely seen and nearly extinct Colorado resident who has been attempting a comeback. Lucky birdwatchers are led on early morning tours by trained guides to view prairie chicken mating sites, called leks. Once there, birders enjoy the rarely seen prairie chicken mating ritual under the cover of a viewing station with the comfort of hot coffee in hand. Tours are offered in two locations throughout the state: the town of Wray and select locations within the Comanche National Grassland. Throughout these areas, the Division of Wildlife and landowners provide access to secret lek locations that allow for one-of-a-kind guided tours into these remote areas.

May 6–18: A Chorus Line
Denver (Denver Area Travel Region)
The Tony-award-winning musical
A Chorus Line graces the stage of the Buell Theatre in Denver. This high-kicking, vocally talented group of performers portray desperate-for-work Broadway dancers during an audition. Through well-choreographed moves, award-winning songs and pathos-soaked characters, the audience learns about the lives of each of the down-on-their-luck dancers. The show itself will be held in the Denver Performing Arts Complex, home to Denver’s orchestra, ballet and theater performances.

May 16–17: Mike the Headless Chicken Festival
Fruita (Northwest Travel Region)
What goes haha, plop? Mike the Headless Chicken laughing his head off. Proving once again that chickens may not be the brightest animals in the barn, Mike, a chicken on a Fruita ranch, was able to survive for 18 months after having his head lopped off. Amazed? The townsfolk of Fruita sure were. While Mike has long since passed on, his indelible sprit to keep going is celebrated every year at Fruita’s Mike the Headless Chicken Festival. Here, you can chicken dance with a polka band, compete in a struttin’ and crowin’ contest, or lace up your running shoes and partake in the Mike 5K Run/Walk where you are encouraged to run like a chicken with its head cut off. You’ll be cackling with joy thanks to these events.

May 16–18: River Rally/PaddleFest 2008
Buena Vista (South Central Travel Region)
Sponsored by Colorado Kayak Supply, the 2008 River Rally/PaddleFest provides river rats and interested onlookers with a kick-off to the summer boating season in Colorado. The weekend will host hundreds of kayakers and thousands of spectators attending on-river competitions and patronizing a variety of vendors and clinics. Both beginners and experts are drawn to this event, some to rub elbows with legends of the sport and others to hone their own abilities. One of the more altruistic goals of the event is to promote river awareness, as well as raise funds for American Whitewater — the nation's leading organization dedicated to conserving and restoring America's whitewater resources.
