Keystone

Current Weather: Fair/Windy, 28 F

Location: 73 miles west of Denver off I-70

Region: Northwest

Elevation: 9250

Population: 924

More a ski area than a town per se, Keystone was built and planned to serve skiers and summer visitors. Visitors here get right down to the business of playing.

It serves all levels of skiers, from beginners to advanced, and a man-made lake is surrounded by attractive ski lodges. The lake, one of the nation's largest groomed skating ponds, is popular with ice skaters in winter, and with paddle-boaters in summer - just don't run over the ducks. A Nordic center caters to cross-country skiers and snowshoers, and instruction is available to both. In summer, those ski trails become hiking trails. The chairlift runs in the summer, too, to get hikers up to mountain-top trails. It's also fun to explore the area on horseback, or play a few rounds of golf on the high-altitude course.

One of the state's more unusual restaurants is tucked away up in the alpine landscape. The Alpenglow Stube requires two chairlift rides and a short walk, but once you're there, you're on top of the world, literally and culinarily speaking. The gourmet cuisine is served in an elegant log lodge, the perfect way to celebrate a fine day of skiing or hiking.
