Capital Prize Mine
Overview
THe Capital Prize Mine & Tunnel Complex is the newest member of Colorados tourist mine experiences, The property is located in historic Georgetown just 3 blocks, and an easy stroll from downtown shops and restaurants. The Prize was founded in 1860, originally owned by the founders of Georgetown, George and David Griffith, it became one of the most modern mines by 1910 and was in mostly continious production until 1969. The tour goes 1300' into Griffith Mtn. on our electric mine train to see a real turn of the century hard rock gold & silver mine. There are excellent high grade ore veins easily visible still in place. The tunnels themselves are testament to the dedication of the miners who blasted them out of solid rock. After the tour, everyone who doesn't have gold fever yet soon gets it when the ore we find gets crushed and everyone gets to try panning at our "in-the-mine" panning station. Everyone gets to keep the gold they find!
