Council Tree Pow Wow & Cultural Festival, Delta: September 18-20, 2009
During the annual Council Tree Pow Wow & Cultural Festival in Delta, feather-bedecked Ute Indians dance to the rhythmic beat of animal-skin drums, display tribal crafts adorning vendor booths and compete in various traditional games. This is not a reenactment of times past; this is an authentic gathering where hundreds of Ute Indians from throughout the region congregate and participate in tribal customs in much the same way as their ancestors. Among the bevy of activities offered is a tour of a tepee village, where guided and self-guided tours of the dwellings will be offered. Visitors to the village learn the proper and traditional way to enter a tepee, as well as the cultural significance of the structure to the lives of Colorado’s native residents.
