WHERE TO FIND WINTER GOLF IN COLORADO
When many states close their courses for the winter, Colorado’s golf experience takes a surprising turn. With snow dusting the treetops and the peaks of the Rockies, a number of Colorado golf courses are still open. In fact, Colorado is a weekend warrior’s dream, with skiing available in the morning and a quick run to the golf course for nine holes with your friends later the same day. There are few other places in the world where talking about your day on the “greens” could either mean an easy run down a ski hill or your short-game on the back nine. While not every golf area in Colorado can stay open year-round, consider these never-say-die locations when planning to play a round.
Grand Junction
In winter, the red-hued sandstone in the area becomes more robust as the colors peak out against the stark white powder of a fresh snowfall. Tee times are much easier to get at courses as winter sets, but the holes are just as challenging, and with an average of 300 days of annual sunshine in Colorado, the skies are just as clear. Consider the Tiara Rado Golf Course, a par 71 public course, located at the base of Colorado National Monument. Or shoot for a low number at The Golf Club at Redlands Mesa, an 18-hole championship course.
Denver Area
Adding nearby urban excitement to easily accessible golf courses, Denver is ideal for a year-round golf excursion. Having your vacation base camp in the Mile High City means you’ve got equal access to a day trip in the mountains and an afternoon on the driving range or golf course. Denver sits at the foothills of the Rocky Mountains, so while snow certainly falls in the city, it isn’t as common as you might think. Golf course managers in and around Denver take great pride in the fact that many of their courses rarely close. In fact, one of the top 100 resort courses in the country, the 18-hole, par-70 Inverness Golf Course is open 362 days a year. If you want to test your skills outside of manicured greens, consider links-style golf at the Saddle Rock Golf Course in Aurora. Open year-round, Saddle Rock is equipped with a pro shop, restaurant, banquet facilities and PGA golf instruction.
Colorado Springs
The Springs – as Colorado Springs is known to locals – has become well known for its year-round golf. When not teeing up at the area’s courses, visitors are admiring Pikes Peak, one of the nation’s most famous landmarks, upon whose summit Katharine Lee Bates was inspired to write “America the Beautiful.” Perhaps the most famous of the city’s multiple year-round golf courses is The Broadmoor’s offerings. This world-famous hotel offers not one, but three distinct courses, each more challenging than the next. In addition to The Broadmoor, the Patty Jewett Golf Course boasts holes with 100-year-old pines and oak trees lining the range and clear views of skyline-grabbing Pikes Peak.
