Shawnee

Among the thickets of trees in Pike National Forest and the rushing waters of the South Platte River is the quiet community of Shawnee. A few rustic cabins and a guest ranch, however, make up the bulk of amenities in this tiny bump in the winding road southwest of Denver.

The opportunities for outdoor adventure in natural areas enveloping Shawnee, however, are endless. Hiking trailheads are located right along U.S. 285 and lead into the rugged confines of the national forest. Farther west, trails atop 10,000-foot Kenosha Pass offer spectacular vistas. Pull-off spots along the river also make ideal locations for an afternoon picnic. Fly fishing on the South Platte near Shawnee is also very popular. Stop into Native Fly Shop in nearby Pine for more details about the best places to cast.

A right turn onto County Road 62 in Grant, just after Shawnee, leads to a dirt road winding to the top of Guanella Pass (11,669 feet) and down the paved side into the historic mining town of Georgetown, off I-70. This drive is also a favorite for viewing changing aspens each fall. Travelers will find basic amenities in the nearby town of Bailey east of Shawnee.
