Silverton

Nestled at 9,318 feet, Silverton resides in the heart of the San Juan Mountains. It’s an ideal basecamp for all kinds of epic adventures. 

Located less than 50 miles from Durango, Silverton was once a mining boomtown but is now a National Historic Landmark District located within 15 miles of seven of Colorado’s most famous 14,000-foot peaks. Hop on the EV-friendly Alpine Loop scenic byway to see those towering mammoths in all their glory. 

To step back into the past stop by the San Juan County Historical SocietyOld Hundred Gold MineMayflower Gold Mill and the Victorian Grand Imperial Hotel. Or climb aboard the Durango & Silverton Narrow Gauge Railroad for open-air thrills as you snake your way along cliff edges next to a roaring river.

Lace up your hiking boots or rev up your Jeep and head out on one of the many trails that start in the town. The family can also camp, raft, horseback ride and fish through pockets of beauty that make up the San Juans.

In winter Silverton Mountain Ski Area is a killer ski destination for expert and advanced skiers and riders, while Kendall Mountain Ski Area provides family-friendly shredding, along with sledding and tubing. Snowmobilers will also find ample groomed trails in Silverton.
