Mapping the Sectional Crisis

<p>Historians rightly treat the Kansas-Nebraska Act of 1854 as a turning point in American life, when the prospect of slavery’s expansion into the west galvanized opposition in the halls of Congress and across the northern states. But far less attention has been paid to the foundational role that maps played in this crisis. Whether used in mass meetings, broadsides, newspapers, or pamphlets, maps visualized the threat slavery posed to the nation’s future, and in the process birthed a broad anti-slavery coalition that ultimately elected Abraham Lincoln to the presidency. Join us to explore how political maps were designed to mobilize the electorate in the 1850s, reshaping visions of the American west and—by extension—the nation itself. <br><br></p>
