You’ll love its Challenge Unlimited Jeep/bike expeditions that run up, then down America’s Mountain and into the state’s glorious backcountry. Operating since 1973, Adventures Out West is one of Colorado’s longest running outdoor adventure companies (with 48 years of guiding experience), and offers glorious hot-air balloon rides, ziplining, Jeep tours, Segway tours and so much more.

Pikes Peak Bicycle Expedition

This one-of-a-kind adventure is an opportunity of a lifetime: It’s your only chance to take a custom Jeep/bike tour on a mountain more than 14,000 feet high (that doubles as an automobile racetrack for the Pikes Peak International Hill Climb each June). Even better, the Jeep only holds five to six guests, which makes for a truly intimate experience. Guides are trained to help along the way, but riders on this big-mountain adventure are in charge of their two-wheeled destiny down Pikes Peak.

What to expect: You’ll reach the summit of Pikes Peak (the tippy top is 14,115 feet high!) in a custom, open-air Jeep before meandering down it via bicycle. This Adventures Out West exclusive trip will pause for a pitstop at the newly renovated Pikes Peak Summit House, an expansive visitor center at the top of Colorado’s most accessible fourteener. Snap some pics and soak in the views while you prepare for your downhill adventure. Then ride an exhilarating 19 miles down America's Mountain with the help of expert guides. You’ll end your big-mountain Jeep/bike expedition by the burbling Fountain Creek for a Wines of Colorado patio lunch to reminisce about all the fun you had.

Insider’s tips: Feeling a bit chilly on the ride up? Not with Adventures Out West. Always prepared, its staff will lend core-warming Columbia Summit parkas to guests. Souvenir neck gaiters and water bottles are also provided to participants for the expedition to the top.

Off-Road Adventure on Gold Camp Road

Take a self-guided or guided mountain-bike ride along historic Gold Camp Road, which follows the former railroad from Colorado Springs to Cripple Creek. This unmatched experience is perfect for independent adventure seekers.

What to expect: This is a true Colorado off-road experience through a landscape of unmatched beauty. The escapade includes a custom Jeep ride to 10,000 feet, then a switch to a mountain bike for a permitted ride through Pike National Forest that showcases a panorama best described by former president Teddy Roosevelt as scenery that “bankrupts the English language.” The ride is all downhill back to Old Colorado City; and the route follows an old railroad bed and is a mix of rock and gravel.

Insider’s tip: Take your time to explore Gold Camp Road on this classic Colorado adventure. You’ll love the unique experience of pedaling through four historical railroad tunnels blasted through with granite.

Things You Need for Your Bike Expedition

Rain, sleet, snow and dry/hot temperatures can be experienced in Colorado year-round. So, it’s best to be prepared for any type of weather, especially on a summit expedition.

Adventures Out West provides the helmet and Summit parkas, but you’ll bring rest, like a light jacket or sweatshirt, sunscreen, boots or tennis shoes, bike gloves and, of course, an adventurous spirit!
