Chivington

Situated near the Kansas border, along CO Hwy. 96, Chivington is an agrarian community in the Great Plains.

The major visitor attraction in the area is the National Park Service-run Sand Creek Massacre Historic Site. It’s from the history of this site that the town takes its name. In 1864, a number of United States soldiers descended upon and attacked a camp of Cheyenne and Arapaho, which mostly consisted of women, children and the elderly. Chivington was the colonel who led the U.S. troops into the slaughter. Today, people can visit the site of the massacre year-round; it's closed to visitation Tuesdays and Wednesdays.
