The Centennial State Limited (Friday Run)

The Centennial State Limited is a premier heritage event of the America 250 - Colorado 150 commemoration, inviting passengers to experience "The View From Here" aboard a living National Historic Landmark. Jointly owned by the states of Colorado and New Mexico, the Cumbres & Toltec Scenic Railroad honors our 150-year legacy with three days of steam-powered excursions (July 31 – August 2, 2026) featuring the historic Engine 168. Built in 1883, just seven years after Colorado's founding, Engine 168 serves as a moving monument to the engineering feats that defined the Centennial State. By traversing the original 1880 tracks, we offer a tangible connection to the dawn of Colorado statehood, preserved as a public trust for all generations. The Centennial State Limited aligns with the statewide mission to reflect on shared history. This journey highlights the "Rural Prosperity" pillar of the commission by drawing heritage tourism to the Mystic San Luis Valley, directly supporting the communities that have stewarded this line for over a century. Detailed Activities The High Plains Loop (Fri/Sun): A focused journey behind Engine 168 through high alpine meadows to the Big Horn Section House. The Statehood Day Doubleheader (Sat): A rare display of power featuring two steam locomotives (168 & 463) climbing to Osier Station for a traditional mountain-side buffet lunch. Note: Trains depart at 11 AM. Passengers should plan to arrive early, around 10 AM, to visit the Antonito Depot, check out our historical display, and take photos. Visitors will be welcomed by special guests before departing. Living History: Onboard "History Ambassadors" share stories of the cultures and people of the Southwest. Every passenger receives a commemorative merchandise bundle to mark this milestone. We welcome history enthusiasts, families, and "Centennial Seekers." We are particularly focused on connecting Colorado residents — and adventurers from all across America — with the diverse stories of the San Luis Valley. This is a unique opportunity to ride a legend that belongs to the people of Colorado.
