Just a short drive from Denver, Evergreen is the kind of town that’s easy to fall for. You’ll find plenty to eat and drink, from local cafes serving fresh-baked pastries to wineries pouring regional reds and whites. Pop into boutiques for apparel and gifts, explore nearby trails for a hike or mountain bike ride, then wind down by the water at Evergreen Lake, a go-to for kayaking and paddleboarding.

Early Morning Activities

Start your day with a coffee drink from Muddy Buck Cafe, a lodge-like coffee shop housed in the historical Evergreen Hotel. Once you step inside, the scent of cappuccino drifts through the air, mingling with the aroma of their famous gooey cinnamon rolls. Hearty options like the breakfast burrito — packed with scrambled eggs and your choice of crispy bacon or sausage — are perfect for pulling up a seat and digging in. If you’re eager to hit the trail, grab your order to go and get rolling.

Only a few minutes by car from Downtown Evergreen, the Evergreen Mountain Trail in Alderfer/Three Sisters Park makes a solid first stop. This moderately challenging loop takes you along shaded paths with just enough elevation to wake up your cardio. The trail winds past natural rock formations and quiet forested stretches of pine before the summit opens to a broad mountain rising in the distance, seen high above the treetops. It’s a satisfying journey on which you can view Evergreen Lake and the surrounding area from atop Evergreen Mountain. It’s also the perfect place to unwrap that cinnamon roll if you brought it along.

Once you’ve worked up a sweat on the trail, make the quick drive to Evergreen Lake and rent a kayak or paddleboard. This small but scenic spot welcomes all ages, whether you’re gliding across the surface on your watercraft or soaking up the afternoon sun. Kayaks and paddleboards are available for rent or you can bring your own — just note that life jackets are required. In winter, the lake transforms into a world renowned ice-skating destination, so the fun doesn’t fade with the season.

Afternoon Adventures

After your time on the water, follow the Evergreen Lake Trail — a flat path that leads from Evergreen Lake to downtown and offers a leisurely walk. Keep your cameras ready as it’s a great area for wildlife watching, with chances to glimpse resident elk or even a bald eagle overhead.

When it’s time for lunch, head to Murphy’s Mountain Grill along Bear Creek for shareable plates like crispy chicken wings or truffled Brussels sprout petals, followed by a loaded, juicy burger topped with chili-dusted bacon. Another nearby option is Creekside Cellars Winery, where you can sip a refreshing Viognier and bite into a ham-and-brie panini pressed inside focaccia.

For a sweet treat, stop by The Colorado Creamery for a scoop or two of vibrant strawberry-lemonade sorbet or chunky cookie monster. This spot is a must for anyone craving something cold and indulgent. The best part? They serve ice cream from Denver’s much-loved Little Man Ice Cream, known for its fresh, homemade flavors.

Make sure to leave yourself time to browse. Set between Bear Creek and cliff walls, Downtown Evergreen is lined with distinctive boutiques and galleries. You might spot your next great find, whether it’s a pair of timeless turquoise earrings at Marmalade Jewelry or a floral-patterned jumpsuit at Streetwater Boutique. You may also get a special treat of watching a local artist creating a new painting in Stoneheart Gallery.

An Evening Out

Once you’ve wandered through town, find live music along peaceful Bear Creek at Cactus Jack’s Saloon & Grill or the iconic Little Bear Saloon just down the road, where Willie Nelson performed in the day. Either spot features regular performances that draw a lively crowd.

Can’t get enough of Evergreen? Stay a while longer with an overnight at one of the area’s charming lodgings, like the themed cottages at Highland Haven Creekside Inn, known for artful walls and unique design touches. The TreeHouse Suite, one of the inn’s standout accommodations, includes its own spa room for an extra touch of relaxation. Or tuck yourself among the trees and along Bear Creek at Colorado Bear Creek Cabins, where a wood-burning fireplace sets the tone for a warm, nature-filled retreat and you can fall asleep to the tranquil sound of the creek.
