Soaring Tree Top Adventures isn’t just another zipline park — it’s a full day’s excursion where you’ll glide between centuries-old trees and soak in the views from above. What sets it apart is how it turns ziplining into an immersive exploration, from a first-class train ride into the woods to a peaceful, elevated lunch overlooking the Animas River.
The Roots of Soaring Tree Top Adventures
Every place has a story. Before Soaring Tree Top Adventures sent guests sweeping through the trees, Tall Timber Resort once stood on the same site. In 1969, 19-year-old Denny Beggrow didn’t just see land — he saw possibility. He bought the property and built the Tall Timber Resort from the ground up. Decades later, his son had an idea that would change everything. In 2004, the family business shifted gears, turning the resort into the high-flying zipline expedition it is today.
First-Class Ride to Sky-High Thrills
The only way to reach Soaring Tree Top Adventures is by hopping aboard a first-class train from downtown Durango or Rockwood Station with Durango & Silverton Narrow Gauge Railroad. Settle into a private luxury car, custom-designed for comfort, as the train takes you deep into the San Juan National Forest.
The train travels through scenic southwest Colorado, passing sky-reaching pines, rugged mountains and rocky ledges. The most thrilling moment comes at the Highline, where the train skirts a sheer 400-foot cliff, revealing a staggering drop into the forest below. Photos won’t do justice — you’ll be glad you saw it in person. The train will be waiting to take you back when your day ends.
A Full Day of Excitement Across 27 Ziplines
As you step off the train, Sky Rangers are there to greet you and get you ready for the journey ahead. First, guests gear up, then after learning the ins and outs of what's ahead, they begin on a few shorter spans in the Genesis section to get comfortable with the spans to come. A span is a segment of zipline cable that carries you from one platform to the next. Once you’re ready, the real fun begins — and you'll find yourself flying over a variety of 27 spans ranging from a breezy 56 feet to a jaw-dropping 1,400 feet.
Brace yourself for Aspen Alley, where slender white-barked trees rise on either side, their leaves rustling as you whiz through. Feel the wind whip past as you drift over the River Section, the Animas rushing beneath your feet. This cool blue-green river, often shifting in color by area, cuts through the forest below, its surface broken by large rocks and flashes of whitewater.
Up for some competition? The head-to-head race spans — 606 foot parallel zips — let you fly alongside a friend to see who reaches the end first. Then comes the big one — the 1,400. Stretching over a quarter mile, it’s nothing but open air and pure speed between you and the next platform. All spans combined total nearly 6 hours of nonstop ziplining action.
Soaring Tree Top Adventures’ patented braking system lets flyers ease off the speed as they go, making it simple for kids and beginners to get comfortable. Others take full advantage — flipping upside down, striking poses midair or tossing a wave as they zoom through the trees. It’s part thrill ride, part aerial playground, allowing adults to let go and feel like kids again.
Sustainable Soaring
Sustainability is the name of the game here. Soaring Tree Top Adventures uses a patented block-and-cable suspension system that keeps the towering ponderosa pines safe, helping them grow healthy. When you step onto a platform, your body weight makes the system gently hug the tree. When you step off, it loosens again. That way, the trees stay unharmed and the platforms stay secure.
There are no bolts and no drilling — just a zipline course designed to leave the trees exactly as they are. Along the way, Eco Rangers share intriguing facts about the ecosystem and Soaring Tree Top Adventures’ efforts to protect one of the country’s rare old-growth ponderosa pine forests.
Scenic Elevated Lunch by the River
Remember picking your lunch from a flexible, varied menu at the start of the day? Well, now it’s time to dig in! After a day in the treetops, a four-course gourmet lunch prepared by five-star chefs is served on an elevated platform overlooking the rippling Animas River.
The sample menu features turkey focaccia stacked with tomatoes and avocado, slow-roasted barbecue pulled pork and a fresh pineapple sandwich. Past guests have boasted about strawberry-and-banana-peanut-butter sandwiches, curry chicken and a sweet finish at the end, a homemade ice cream sandwich.
Vegetarian and kid-friendly options are available, and the staff is happy to accommodate dietary needs and food allergies — just give them a heads-up ahead of time.
