Take in the Extraordinary Views

Carved by the Arkansas River over millions of years, this 1,250-foot-deep canyon attracts hundreds of thousands of visitors each year. Peer over the cascading granite cliffs and you’ll be in awe of the sheer magnitude of this natural wonder. Trek 1,260 feet across America’s highest suspension bridge and use your binoculars to scope out the intrepid rafters braving the rushing waters below. Ready for a new perspective? Head to the park’s pet-friendly Aerial Gondola for a 360-degree view of the gorge in all its glory. This unforgettable experience is included free-of-charge with general admission.

Another way to experience the breathtaking views of the Royal Gorge is by hiking to one of the scenic overlooks within and just outside of the park. From here, you’ll be able to snap a scrapbook-worthy family photo — with the bridge and surrounding landscape in the background — and view miles of the Arkansas River as it winds through the slopes. The Overlook Trail and Loop, for example, provides an easy 1-mile trail, perfect for taking in all the idyllic sights the natural landmark has to offer.

Brave the Exciting Rides & Experiences

While seeing the gorge is grand, the only way to truly engage all the senses is by experiencing one of the many exciting rides at the park (just be sure to check the individual age and height/weight requirements for each ride beforehand). The Royal Rush Skycoaster takes you on a 50 mph joyride, extending 1,200 feet above the gorge for a moment of weightlessness — it’s enough to make Superman jealous!

America’s highest zipline, the Cloudscraper Zip Line, is another ride that’ll scratch that adventure itch by sending you lightning-speed over the Arkansas while spectators cheer you on. If you still haven’t gotten enough thrills, meet up with a professional guide and scale the jagged rock faces of the Royal Gorge with Via Ferrata rock climbing. The kids’ll have no need to exaggerate when they tell their friends about this one.

Delve Into the Region’s History

No family vacation would be complete without setting aside time to dive into the region’s history. From Zebulon Pike first setting foot atop the soaring cliffs of the Royal Gorge to the complicated, yet intriguing Colorado railroad war, you’ll have a hard time pulling yourself away. At the Plaza Theater, you’ll find year-round activities like a mini-documentary and original artifacts and photos collected throughout the Royal Gorge’s history. Finally, make your way to the Visitor’s Center to see the park’s one-of-a-kind Water Clock.

Enjoy Live Entertainment During the Summer Months

While the Royal Gorge Bridge & Park can be enjoyed year-round, summer is when its entertainment scene comes to life. With Nature’s Educators, kids will delight in their fascination of birds of prey. During this interactive show, you’ll see live raptors as they soar above the crowd, and you’ll learn about their diet, behavior and habitat. Stop by the Elk Park Amphitheater on the south side of the Royal Gorge Bridge for educational and cultural entertainment. Be sure to check the event schedule to see all the exciting year-round activities the park has to offer.

Enjoy Some Fun in the Sun

From panning for gold at Ole Zeb’s Sluice Box to taking a ride on the vintage-style Daisy’s Carousel, Tommy Knocker Playland is where kids’ dreams become a reality. Here they can climb the enclosed, three-story playland and explore the tunnels and slides. Or head over to Musket Mine to let the little ones test their target skills with this carnival-style game. When they’re ready to cool down, running through the splash pad and grabbing an ice cream cone are perfect ways to round out the day.
