Head to Matterhorn Campground in Ophir, near Telluride, for all the scenic, peak-strewn beauty you could ask for — not to mention access to multiple national forests and wilderness areas that boast countless recreation opportunities.
This National Forest Service campground is a wonderful option for RVs, offering 28 single-family sites, four of which have septic and electric hookups. Picnic tables, campfire rings, ample firewood, warm showers, flush toilets and mountain-fresh drinking water are all available. Sites along the inner ring of the campground are pretty open, but those around the outer edges are set away from the rest and offer more privacy. Sites 12–18 back up to the woods and are among the most popular, with site 14 known for its great views. If you want to set up camp close to the shower house, sites 5 and 6 are on either side of it.
Fans of Matterhorn are struck by the campground’s close proximity to Telluride, swearing they can enjoy the same million-dollar views many of the world-renowned vacation homes offer for a fraction of the price. That closeness also means it’s easy to shower and go into town for a night out should you want to escape the wilderness for a bit.

If you’re lucky, your campsite will deliver stunning views of ruggedly beautiful Sheep Mountain surrounded by pines so lush you’ll feel like it’s Christmas in July.
It’s definitely the potable water, flush toilets and hot showers. These are welcome luxuries you won’t always discover at other Colorado campgrounds.
There’s a marshy area nearby where you can spot quacking ducks, great blue herons, soaring hawks and many other avian species. Watch them chatter, fly and feed as you enjoy the area’s tranquility.

Matterhorn Campground sits in the middle of the Grand Mesa, Uncompahgre and Gunnison national forests, so outdoor opportunities are seemingly endless. Trout Lake, Alta Lakes and the San Miguel River South Fork Preserve are all nearby. The 8.4-mile Galloping Goose Trail #449 connects right to the campground and is open for hiking, biking and horseback riding. Enjoy glimpses into the past as you travel along segments of the historical Rio Grande Southern Railway, including a restored train trestle. Many scenic driving routes, both paved and off road, wind through the area.
If you need a break from outdoor play, motor over to nearby Telluride for artisanal dining options, boutique shopping, a bounty of live music (especially in summer), history tours, fine art galleries and so much more. Or catch the free gondola that connects Telluride to nearby Mountain Village for even more shopping and dining. You’ll be rewarded with breathtaking San Juan Mountain views as you ride.
