Located less than two miles from the Kansas border, Towner is the easternmost town in Colorado and is found on the easternmost edge of Kiowa County.

A few miles to the west is the Sand Creek Massacre National Historic Site, where, in 1864, a contingent of United States military personnel attacked a settlement of Cheyenne and Arapaho Indians. The site is now run by the National Park Service and is open to visitors April through November.
