<p>A few miles to the west is the <a href="/historic-sitelandmark/sand-creek-massacre-national-historic-site">Sand Creek Massacre National Historic Site</a>, where, in 1864, a contingent of United States military personnel attacked a settlement of Cheyenne and Arapaho Indians. The site is now run by the National Park Service and is open to visitors April through November.</p>
